Analysis
This manuscript was copied by Antonio d'Orazio (1551-1639), nephew of the architect Antonio da Sangallo the younger, for his own use. It is mentioned among the books that Antonio d'Orazio owned before 1613, when he was imprisoned for extortion (his list of books is kept in MS Ricc. 2244, fol. 22r). The textual and visual comparison shows that FL2 was based on one of the earliest manuscripts of Leonardo's Treatise on Painting documented in Florence. By and large it follows F6 with minor variations in some chapters, which however can be explained as part of the copying process (see CID 196, 197, 289, 359 and 360) with the exception of CID 155 which cannot derive from F6 as in F6 that chapter is shorter. CID 155 derives, however, from either FM2 or F2. The title of FL2, "Modo del dipingere", is documented in this manuscript for the first time, but it appeared in numerous 17-century manuscripts associated with the editorial work of Cassiano dal Pozzo (1588-1657) and Galeazzo Arconati (1592-1648) between 1634 and 1640 (see manuscripts CE, M3, M4, MV1, N1, RC1, VB).
History
The ownership of Antonio d'Orazio d'Antonio da Sangallo (1551-1639) is documented in a note on the frontispiece. Later, the manuscript belonged to Bargagli Petrucci and in 1959 it was acquired by the Biblioteca Mediceo Laurenziana.
